Trainer focuses on education, support
Lake Junaluska business owner Keith Corbeil was honored during a December banquet sponsored by the Mountain Microenterprise Fund.
Corbeil’s business, Corbeil Performance Consulting (CPC) and GoAskATrainer.com, was one of two honored for its support to small business.
Corbeil’s continuing efforts to provide entrepreneurs with a means for education, training and mentorship, along with his efforts to foster economic development was cited during the plaque presentation.
For the past 10 years, Corbeil’s business has provided business owners with unique training opportunities, both in a seminar-type setting and on site.
“In December, I took 31 people from a company and explained what a performance appraisal system was and worked through that,” he said. “I’m also working with community colleges on construction seminars where we deal with a lot of smaller operators looking to upgrade their business or obtain a contractor’s license.”
If the requested training topic is one with which Corbeil is unfamiliar or hasn’t taught in the past, it is not necessarily a roadblock, he said.
“In my capacity as an educator, I like to learn just as much as the students,” he said. “When I choose to take a project on, I dive in and learn three times more than I need in order to present it.”
Corbeil also said he uses unique tactics to get points across. For instance, he recalled, there was a recent seminar in Raleigh where he was stressing the value of using various teaching methods to reach students.
“I brought a giant inner tube in and asked them to come up and show class how they would use inner tube to get from one point on the lake to another,” he said. “We then bridged the experience into teaching students in many learning styles. It not only broke the ice but also had a certain point of action.”
After the seminar, Corbeil said he received a number of e-mails from participants asking him to conduct a training session and bring his inner tube to their class.
